One of the other reviewers complained that their guitar teacher called this a “1/4 sized guitar” and it appeared that they felt they had gotten a bad deal. No, it is a 3/4 sized guitar – this is based on scale length and not overall size of the guitar – but it is small. This guitar has a 21 1/4″ scale (normal is about 26″ but it varies), a 12 1/2″ lower bout and a 9″ upper bout. This places it in the parlor size category, more or less, and it fits a child well.

This is a fully functioning guitar with a solid spruce top, decent craftsmanship, and an adjustable truss rod. The action is acceptable (although it needs setup at the nut) and the tone is, well, there. You are never going to confuse the Yamaha FG JR1 for a 00 Taylor. It is a 0 guitar. The main virtues are its size, playability, and price. For that 0 you get a well made, well designed small guitar suitable for all ages with enough tone and volume to hold its own in a small group. You can take it aboard any plane and place it in the overhead rack. If you are sitting around the campfire and have to fight off a bear with it, you are only out 0 and it is sturdy enough to tolerate at least one swing.

The adjustable truss rod lets you change the relief of the neck in all sorts of conditions (assuming you are brave enough to do so) and a little filing on the nut by your luthier (don’t try this at home unless you have some experience) will make it very playable for both finger style and pick.

So it is not the top of the line, it works well for what it was intended to be. It sure beats the heck out of the so-called travel guitars which all sound like they are made from cardboard and look like the set designer of Avatar or LOTR produced them for orcs. If you are looking for a quality small guitar but are too cheap to pay for one, give the Yamaha FG JR1 a look.

Gibson electric guitars are among the most popular in the world. The Les Paul Standard is the company’s most popular guitar. The Gibson Company also produces Epiphone guitars since they purchased the company in 1957. They also produce Baldwin pianos, Slingerland Drums and many other instruments under different brand names like Kramer and Tobias.

Orville Gibson started out making mandolins during the last decade of the 19th century in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The arched top and bent sides were an innovation that produced a better sounding instrument that was even easier to make. He patented this type of mandolin in 1898, and founded the company in 1902 to begin selling the instruments.

Gibson began producing acoustic guitars in a similar fashion as the mandolins with a carved and arch top that became a signature design. In the 1930s they began producing flattop acoustic guitars and Gibson electric guitars that became popular thanks to well-known musician Charlie Christian.

The 1936 release of Gibson electric guitars known as the Electric Spanish model was the first electric guitar to become a commercial success. Then with the release of Fender’s Telecaster guitar, Gibson decided to compete with its own solid-bodied guitar. At that time, the idea of a solid-bodied guitar was undesirable in the musical word, but the Fender guitars pave the way for the styles success.

Soon the flagship of Gibson electric guitars was created, the Les Paul. Ironically, the creation of this guitar had little or no input from its namesake, who was a pioneer in solid-bodied guitar technology. It was created, and then Paul signed a contract to endorse the use of his name. He wanted the tail piece of the guitar changed, and that became his only contribution to its design.

The late 1950s offered several different designs of Gibson electric guitars including the Flying V, the Explorer and the partly hollow-bodied ES-335. The Gibson electric guitars named for Les Paul were released in several different models as well, and then the main design of these Gibson electric guitars was changed in 1961 so the body could change to a double-cutaway body design. Les Paul was displeased by this new design and ended his endorsement of the guitar. It then became the SG, which stood for Solid Guitar.

Gibson purchased top competitor Epiphone in 1957 and absorbed their popular brands. They originally intended to market Epiphone’s line of upright basses, as Gibson’s bass production had stopped during WWII and not resumed. But they quickly realized that they would have better success marketing Epiphone electric guitars.

Then when famous musicians like Eric Clapton, Peter Green and the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards popularized the Gibson electric guitars even further, the Les Paul guitar came back to Gibson’s lineup in 1968 and surged in popularity along with the SG design. Both guitars became hugely popular especially among some very well known hard rock and heavy metal guitar players, and entire bands.

The production between 1974 and 1984 moved from Kalamazoo to Nashville, TN. Two years later the company changed ownership hands, and the company has flourished under the new management, producing Gibson electric guitars and other instruments that set the standard for musical excellence. In 1994, the CEO decided that establishing relationships with environmentally friendly and aware companies would be a good move for the company, and the use of environmentally harvested tropical woods began during the production of Gibson electric guitars. A portion of the profits of each of these SmartWood Gibson electric guitars was donated to the Rainforest Alliance.

Gibson continues to be one of the most popular names in electric guitars and other instruments still today. One of the Gibson electric guitars produced today, called the Robot Guitar, is even a self-tuning guitar that tunes itself in 10 seconds. Gibson electric guitars command premium prices, and vintage Gibson guitars are some of the most prized collectibles among guitar enthusiasts and collectors who specialize in vintage guitars and vintage electric guitars.

Just about every kid ever born wants to be a rock star. They see their favorite stars up there on stage playing the electric guitar to a crowd and want to do the same. Problem is, it’s not easy learning to play the electric guitar.

And of course before you learn to play the guitar you need to own a guitar, or at least borrow one. When you’re just starting out learning the electric guitar you don’t need one like Jimmy Hendrix would play, but you still need to get your hands on an electric guitar that will be adequate for the beginner. And if that’s you then there’s a few things that you need to know about electric guitars that may help in understanding a little more about them.

First thing to remember about buying your first electric guitar is that you don’t need to spend hundreds of thousands to do so. Be happy with a cheap electric guitar while you’re learning, and maybe once you hit the big time spend up big. However a cheap electric guitar will do the job for the first few years.

You also need to know exactly what style of music you will be playing on your guitar. Different styles of music require different styles of electric guitar. You need a different guitar to play rock, for example, to the guitar you’d buy if you were playing jazz.

So spend a little time researching the types of electric guitar that should be used by different music styles.

Electric guitar types boil down to 2 basic types, solid body and hollow body. As the name suggests a solid body guitar has no hollow space inside, and is usually, though not exclusively, made of solid wood. Different types of timber can produce different sounds, so as you get better you may want to research more on the type of timber you need to produce the sound you want, but in the early stages if you’re buying a cheap electric guitar don’t get too carried away getting the ideal timber, you may find it more expensive than you need to be paying, and it’s not essential at the start.

And there’s a few unusual terms you’ll need to become familiar with if you’re buying an electric guitar for the first time. Here’s a taste.

Pickups. The pickup is a magnet with a coil of wire wrapped around it placed right under the strings. This receives the vibrations of the strings and turns these into an electric signal for the amp to use. There are 2 types of pickup. The single coil, which produces a sound that sounds good for playing rock, blues and country. Humbuckers are a pickup with 2 coils next to each other that produces a warmer sound which is great for metal and rock in particular. Some guitars have a combination of single coils and humbuckers, and there is usually at least 2 pickups utilized.

Bridge. The bridge is where the strings connect to the body of the guitar. You can have a fixed bridge or a Vibrato bridge which allows you to move the bridge to tighten or loosen the strings. The fixed bridge is better for beginners who can graduate to a Vibrato bridge after they’ve mastered the basics.

Hollow body electric guitars are the second basic style of guitar. These, as the name suggests, have a hollow body although there is also a variation of this which is the semi hollow. As the player plays his guitar the hollow space helps the body resonate which produces a quite distinctive sound. These are good guitars for jazz. These hollow body guitars also utilize pickups, including single coil and humbucker.

That’s really just the start when it comes to understanding electric guitars, and for the enthusiast it’s a lifetime job learning all there is to know about them. And finding out exactly what it is that you need to play to produce exactly the sound you want to produce. That’s part of the fun of playing the guitar, it’s a constant learning process, not just about how to play but what to play as well.

However remember, the most important piece of advice. If you’re a beginner don’t spend up big the first time. Buy yourself a cheap electric guitar first, then learn to play that and take it from there. It’s the best way to kick off your rock star career.
